I bike to work three or four times a week from Reading to Andover. It is 16 miles. I switched from riding a road bike rarely, to work to riding a mountain bike (with slick tires) more frequently.
Biking takes only a few minutes longer, is safer, more relaxing and I leave the saddlebags on so no daypack on my back. Plus it it's a better workout!

BLOGGER'S NOTE: Knobby mountain bike tires cause more road friction and resistance, so mountain bikes can be up to 30 percent slower than riding a road bike. Changing to "slick" tires lowers resistance and speeds up the ride on a mountain bike. It's still not as fast as a road bike, but it's an improvement.
